Gas prices coasted 2.5 cents higher per litre of regular fuel across Canada over the past week, led by a trio of British Columbia cities.

Kelowna, Fort St. John and Vancouver saw the biggest gains at the pump between June 13 and June 20, according to data from Kalibrate. The average cost nationwide rose from $1.642 per litre to $1.667.

Drivers in Yellowknife got the biggest discount, as prices fell seven cents.

Meanwhile, car buying climbed 5.7 per cent year-over-year in May, according to the latest figures from DesRosiers Automotive Consultants. Sales last month totalled 169,000 units, up from 164,000 in April.

“While sales continue to grow year-over-year, volatility at the provincial level appears to have returned in force for May,” managing partner Andrew King wrote in a report published this week.

Sales in Newfoundland surged 27.5 per cent last month. Ontario barely budged, adding 1.4 per cent.

For June, auto sales may take a hit from an ongoing cyber outage at Canadian and U.S. dealerships. As of Thursday afternoon, “hundreds of dealers” in Canada were experiencing problems stemming from issues at retail technology and software provider CDK.

Tim Reuss, president and CEO of the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association, told CBC News that dealers have had to resort to pen and paper to sell vehicles.
