Mannion puts focus on Micron, abortion rights in first TV ad

State Sen. John Mannion highlights his support for abortion rights and legislation that helped attract Micron to central New York in his first TV ad of the Democratic primary for the 22nd Congressional District seat.

The ad, titled “Yearbooks,” began airing Tuesday in central New York, according to Mannion’s campaign. He is seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Brandon Williams in the 22nd district, which includes Onondaga and Madison counties, plus parts of Cayuga, Cortland and Oneida counties.

John Mannion highlights his work on legislation that helped bring Micron to central New York and support for abortion rights in his first TV ad of the Democratic primary for the 22nd Congressional District seat.

Mannion’s ad provides details about his background — he’s a former public school teacher — and his track record in the state Senate.

One of Mannion’s legislative achievements is the passage of the Green CHIPS legislation, which provides state incentives to chip manufacturers. Micron, which is planning to invest $100 billion over 20 years to build a massive manufacturing facility in Onondaga County, will benefit from the Green CHIPS program.

“John Mannion passed a law bringing 50,000 new jobs to our area,” the ad’s narrator notes.

Mannion, D-Geddes, also supported legislation that protects abortion access in New York, according to the ad. After the Supreme Court’s ruling in 2022 that overturned Roe v. Wade, the state Legislature passed an abortion rights package. Records show he voted for the six bills that were signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul.

In the ad, Mannion pledges he will “work to guarantee abortion rights” in Congress.

Mannion and Sarah Klee Hood, a DeWitt town councilor and Air Force veteran, are vying for the Democratic nomination in the 22nd district. Klee Hood also released her first TV ad, which focuses on abortion rights, on Tuesday.

The Democratic primary election is Tuesday, June 25.
